Martell Kardone on what inspired him to sing from a young age

2 min

Since its inception, hip-hop music has unfolded in diverse ways. If there’s one thing about hip-hop that the fans love, it’s arguing about the genre more than listening to it. With artists like Post Malone, Cardi B, and Drake dominating the music scene and generating half the revenue of the industry through the stories they tell, hip-hop and R&B are now a mainstream movement.

Martell Lord DeRouen, a rising star in the hip-hop genre, is creating ripples in the industry with his latest single, ‘Magic.’ Popularly known as Kardone, the artist has been able to carve a niche for himself through his powerful words. Music runs in the blood of his family. Born in New Iberia, Louisiana, Martell was widely known for being the cousin of Beyoncé. However, he started gaining widespread attention with his own musical pursuits that include collaboration with renowned singer Ray J and rapper Paul Wall on one of his two singles, namely, ‘911.’ The music video of the song was directed by Ethan Maniquis, the co-director of 2010 action thriller ‘Machete.’

Kardone said his African-American lineage and urban working class background inspired him to ideate and curate music from an early age. Tales of his African oral tradition and the desire to influence others through his unique storytelling motivated Kardone to emerge as a professional rapper who closely followed the works of rhyme gods like 2 Pac, 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes among others.

Kardone, who is giving finishing touches to his debut album, to be released through The Orchard platform of Sony Music, released his debut mixtape, Trunk Bang, in 2016 by way of Empire. Since then, Kardone has been off the hook and welcomed by the music artists across the globe. Producer Isaac Flame, experienced in working with some of the biggest names of the industry such as T.I.,  Rich Gang and Young Thug, and Quality Control’s in-house engineer Stephen “Dotcom” Farrow have assisted Kardone in his debut album, which is scheduled to be released this summer. The launch of Magic with its fun animation-based video has already created much anticipation among the close followers of this genre.

“I chose this career because music is what keeps me going and this is what I am most passionate about. It is an incredible feeling to be able to pursue a professional career in something I love doing. I would love to inspire and motivate others through my music. My debut album portrays the story of my musical journey. It is a reflection of how I perceive music. I am glad that my latest single, Magic, has received a warm welcome from all over the globe,” said Martell.

The young rapper’s track features a brilliant fast-slow tempo with frequent rhyming of lyrics by the artist. Much in tune with the present-era hip-hop numbers, Magic, as experts say, holds the promise of bringing a fresh episode in the world music scene.
