Woody Allen has written and directed a film titled A Rainy Day in New York, due for release in Italy on October 3rd, 2019. The release date and location has led to speculation as to whether it could launch in September at the Venice Film Festival – although this has yet to be confirmed. Lucky Red of Italy has agreed to distribute the film after Amazon Studios paused its release indefinitely in the United States. Here’s why Woody Allen’s latest project will be a must see.
A Tumultuous Release
2018 was the first year Woody Allen didn’t release a new movie since 1981. The hiatus was not Allen’s choice; it was borne from the scandal that has rocked his life since the 1990s, but has continued to today. Amazon originally offered Allen a four-picture deal years ago, with Rainy Day as part of the agreement (along with Café Society and Wonder Wheel). Allen finished Rainy Day in 2017, but the film is only this year hitting screens because of Amazon shelving the film indefinitely.
Despite Woody Allen stating that Amazon knew of the allegations against him when he signed the agreement, and that they are completely false, Amazon refused to release A Rainy Day as scheduled. Instead, a distributor in Italy, Lucky Red, agreed to release Allen’s latest film in December of this year. Despite the trouble with Amazon, critics are anticipating an enormous audience for the film overseas upon its release. Lucky Red also released Wonder Wheel in 2017. Lucky Red will distribute the Rainy Day movie to multiple territories in Europe, Asia, and South America.
Woody Allen’s Latest Project
Many people will flock to watch A Rainy Day for no other reason besides Woody Allen’s name on the project. Woody Allen has had a career in show biz over a six-decade span, getting his start as a comedy writer for television. He has won four Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, three Oscars, and ten BAFTAs.
In his own words, however, Allen could not care less if he was awarded anything or any desperately sad allegations. He is notoriously missing from award ceremonies, despite dozens of nominations and wins. Allen is best known for romantic comedies with elements of parody and strong and well-defined female characters. A Rainy Day in New York will be a must-see for any loyal Woody Allen fan.
An All-Star Cast
Woody Allen’s films are known for their star power, and A Rainy Day will be no exception. A-listers like Elle Fanning, Jude Law, and Selena Gomez signed onto the project amid other stars such as Timothée Chalamet and Liev Shreiber. Fanning and Chalamet play two young people who spend a weekend in New York, only to have poor weather and a series of misfortunes befall them. Not much else is known about the plot of A Rainy Day, except that there may be a storyline involving a relationship between Jude Law and Elle Fanning.
There is no news as to if or when distributors will release A Rainy Day in New York in the United States. Global audiences, however, will be able to enjoy the flick in October of this year, if not sooner at the Venice Film Festival.
