Electronic Arts and DICE are currently making the next installment of the Star Wars Battlefront video game franchise–Star Wars Battlefront 3. Rumors are emerging about the production for the game (via MakingStarWars.net) and which the Star Wars films the game will cover. Details have not officially been revealed by EA or DICE. However, the rumors indicate that the new game will cover all the films of the Star Wars saga, including the Prequel Trilogy and the Original Trilogy. Most of the game will be set in the original trilogy, but it will feature events from the prequels and the major spaceship battle from the opening of Revenge of the Sith. The game should focus strictly on the classic Original Trilogy and look forward to the future of Star Wars with the new sequel, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.
The Prequel Trilogy of Star Wars turned out to be an absolute mess. The plotting was dull and muddled. The conflicts were confusing and poorly established. The narrative In the Original Trilogy was a simplistic and more cohesive. There was an evil Empire and a heroic Rebellion of good guys. The good guys are trying to overthrow the evil Empire. It is that simple. The days of the Old Republic poorly established a weak conflict involving a Trade Federation that simply did not cut the mustard. The future of Star Wars Battlefront should really cut ties with maligned prequel trilogy and look to the future. The less desirable elements of Star Wars should be routed out and ignored. I doubt that director JJ Abrams is going to give any lip service to midichlorians for the next Star Wars sequel.
Nevertheless, some of the rumored ideas for the new game sound fun, if true. The rumors mentioned that the game will have battles that support as many as 64-player battles. This is similar to the new Battlefield games. The report also indicated that Battlefront 3 will have single-player and multiplayer campaign modes. That is good news to give some added replay value to the game.
If the report is to be believed, the campaign will have a final section that serves as a prelude to The Force Awakens. That sounds very intriguing. The plot of the film is steeped in mystery, so I am very excited about how Battlefront will play into the new film.
More details for Star Wars Battlefront 3 will be released later this spring. The game is scheduled for a holiday 2015 release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows Pc. That puts the game out just in time for The Force Awakens.
