For fans of the Final Fantasy 13 series, a slew of shiny, new screenshots were released recently for the upcoming third installment, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. (You can check out the screenshots below.) Most of the screenshots showed Lightning and her new costume which featured predominantly red and white. In regards to this new look of Lightning’s, some fans were upset; however, some of the key developers explained the reasoning behind this new look, as well as revealing some more details on Lightning’s new role.
In a Famitsu interview translated by Siliconera, developers Motomu Toriyama, Yoshinori Kitase and Yuji Abe, explained that they wanted Tetsuya Nobura to design Lightning’s new look in a way that represented strength. Toriyama states in the interview “that the color red symbolizes strength better than any other. In the end, we decided to go half white and red for Lightning’s color scheme”. In terms of story, the developers also explained that Lightning has been assigned as a Liberator by Bhunivelze, a Fabula Nova Crystallis god. As Liberator, she was given her new attire to act as almost like a uniform of sorts, in which she is responsible for transferring souls to a new world when the current one ends in 13 days.
Strength seems to be exactly what Lightning will need to accomplish her task and her new look definitely works in that respect. With Lightning’s look being customizable in the game, if you don’t like it, you’re free to change it. Get ready for the finale to Lightning’s journey when Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is released later this year for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
