There’s nothing serious at all about this franchise!  Serious Sam is a goofy, old school shooter series that mocks the clichés of modern first person shooters.  The third game in the series, Serious Sam BFE came out for PC a year ago, but just made its way onto consoles where it appears as not one,...

Game designers try to find a balance between the Player’s head and hands.  Some games, like turn-based strategy, are focused entirely on making the Player think.  Others, like bullet hell shooters, test their reflexes.  Fractured Soul puts players in command of a character who runs and shoots like in an action game, but it also...

Some game genres are so refined that there is little call for innovation.  JRPG’s, online FPS, Visual novels have swarms of near identical games that keep their fans happy.  Autorunners are a new breed of such game that rose up with touchscreen mobile devices.  The characters run along the levels automatically, building momentum and the...

The first episode of the adventure series Cognition introduced players to Erica Reed, an FBI agent with psychic powers.  Erica’s ability to see into the past of locations she visited was an innovative twist on the adventure genre.  The series also tackled mature and gruesome subject matter by having Erica investigate a series of grizzly...

Whittling down Michel Ancel’s fanciful Rayman Origins onto a portable device was always going to be a tough challenge. The PSVita coped admirably with that task, retaining the heart and humour of the original whilst adding enough new ingredients to make it feel like not-such-a-direct-to-handheld-port. However this isn’t the PSVita… and this isn’t Rayman Origins…...

Quantum Conundrum is a game that shares many things in common with Portal—its lead designer, its genre, and even a few of its mechanics. However, the game differs entirely when it comes to the mood surrounding the game, the narrator, the main mechanics, and the puzzles, and it was also published by Square Enix, and...

This week was rather slow, with everyone distracted by the holidays! I didn’t even manage to finish my Greensleeves redstone composition in Minecraft (although the room for it is all hollowed out, thanks to the help of a friend). I’ll probably use it for another song. Ideas, anyone? Speaking of Minecraft, the documentary was released...

As far as indie titles go, the side-scrolling, metroidvania brawler is pretty standard fare. Reiterating on this design time and time again can get boring.  However, Drinkbox’s latest game Guacamelee artfully dodges any possible complaints of dullness with a lively art style, well crafted controls, and unmercifully challenging platforming.  Guacamelee is not simply regurgitating a...

Who needs Modern warfare?  Back in the old days, soldiers didn’t need robot drones and night-vision sniper rifles to kill each other.  A good broadsword and a throwin’ ax was all it took to gib some noobs.  Online shooters are all well ‘n’ good, but nothing satisfies the bloodlust like lopping off a foe’s head...

Immersion appears to be a difficult thing to achieve in a first-person shooter for most developers. Either that, or developers just throw in the single-player as a side-thought to what is essentially a multiplayer-focused shooter. Ironic, given that the whole idea of this perspective is that you see the world directly through your character’s eyes....
