The Order 1886: Length Rumors are Cause for Concern

1 min

Apparently, some videos have leaked on YouTube for The Order 1886, the highly anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusive game from Ready At Dawn Studios. Based on the videos, the game is only about five and a half hours long, and about half that time contains the unskippable cinematic cutscenes for the game. There has been much controversy about this matter. However, most of all, if there is any truth to what has been leaked on YouTube, the future of The Order 1886 is most concerning.

The Order 1886 might be a short game, and it would not be alone. Plenty of new games have fairly short single-player campaign modes. Some games even have single-player campaigns that players can speed through quite quickly. However, many games have shorter campaigns to add flavor to provide additional flavor and added replay value to the gameplay experience. An action-adventure game might have an open-world sandbox environment with lots of nooks and crannies to explore. Some games have additional side quests for added content and story. The Uncharted series incorporated multiplayer gameplay into the franchise starting with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. That adds a lot of replay value to the game. However, the problem is that The Order 1886 has no multiplayer gameplay. The game only consists of its single-player campaign mode. I have played demos of two different stages of the game. The stages are very linear and straight-forward. The game does have some extra rooms and collectibles to add story and players can examine and check them out. However, this is not a gigantic, open-world sandbox game like the Batman: Arkham games or Grand Theft Auto. The story for The Order 1886 is clearly a linear, cinematic experience.

If The Order 1886 is really a short game that clocks in at under 10 hours, then Ready At Dawn is essentially asking players to buy a new, shockingly short game for $60 plus tax. The game does not provide much to do after the player finishes. It appears that the game will not have any type of New Game+ mode, which usually offers a more difficult challenge, as well as special bonuses, to players.  For example, players can start with all the weapons and items they have collected over the course of the game, or they will have special perks like infinite ammo.

I am still somewhat excited about The Order. However, if the campaign is as really as short as rumored, I will probably be disappointed. The game hits the shelves on February 24. It will be available exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
