Orc Attack Preview – Now We’re Cookin’ With Gas

2 min

Those pesky humans just can’t leave the poor Orcs alone!  The human-centric fantasy world is a thing of the past.  For quite a while, games like Warcraft have tried to offer a more rounded view of what it’s like to live a world filled with multiple intelligent species, and in the upcoming game Orc Attack this concept is used for plenty of goofy fun. It was available for hands-on play at PAX Prime and Explosion got a few minutes with this humorous downloadable action RPG.

Orc Attack plays, in many ways, like a typical fantasy action RPG as players pick from a list of characters that each have a special selection of powers, then head out to hammer out combos on swarms of bad guys.

However Orc Attack has a silly and unique gimmick: the humans have poisoned the orcs food supply and that has resulted in extremely flatulent orcs.

Players can select from several different orcs, who each suffer from a slightly different form of chronic gassiness that imbues their burps and farts with special powers like fire, petrification, poison, or even healing.

The orcs all have a Burp attack that targets enemies directly in front of them in a cone-shaped blast.  There is also a point blank cloud attack of flatulence that affects targets nearby.  The various attacks can be combined for special effects, such as the option of using a flaming burp to ignite any methane clouds that happen to be on the battlefield.

It’s very juvenile, but unabashedly so.  Aside from this gassy gimmick, the game also gives the orcs typical hand-to-hand combat attacks. As players put the hurt on enemies using these basic weapon attacks, they slowly build up a gas meter which charges their special powers.  Other combat tactics are available too, including the ability to pick up shields dropped by enemies.

Games of this sort are always more fun when played with a team, and Orc Attack supports multiplayer both local and online.  The option of mixing special attacks for explosive results helps encourage co-operative play, as does the chaotic nature of the battles.

Judging by the hands-on demo at PAX Prime, the game has the potential to get repetitive, and faces the possibility that the fart jokes will lose their luster over the course of its 25 missions.  However, there are RPG elements to it and players will be able to upgrade their character as they go, thereby adding some variety.  There are also eight playable characters which should help ease the repetition, especially when playing as a diverse group in multiplayer.

Orc Attack is the first game put out by the development team of Casual Brothers.  There’s no official release date as of this writing, but it is due out this year as a downloadable title for Xbox Live, and Playstation Network.  It is currently a candidate for Steam’s Greenlight community program to select indie games for distribution on Steam.  Gamers with Steam accounts can vote for it here.  Players on other platforms will have to wait until it releases later this year.
