No Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon Sequel is Disappointing News

1 min

After playing Far Cry 4 earlier this year, I was very excited about the possibility of a potential follow-up to Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon. Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is possibly one of the greatest pieces ever made of expansion downloadable content for a major triple-A game. Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon was a fun action romp and homage to glorious high-octane action cinema of the 1980s and early first-person shooters. Unfortunately, it seems that the staff at Ubisoft Montreal has no plans to make a follow-up to Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon. The news is quite disappointing.

Per an interview with IGN, Alex Hutchinson of Ubisoft Montreal confirmed that the developer is not going to make any type of spin-off to Blood Dragon. Instead, Ubisoft Montreal will make something else. Judging from the tone of Hutchinson’s statement, it seems that Ubisoft Montreal does not want to do something similar to Blood Dragon again. Instead, if there is another stand-alone expansion for Far Cry, the expansion would have to be something completely different than the end result of Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon.

On some level, I completely understand where Hutchinson is coming from. The team does not want to rehash Blood Dragon. There is probably a certain fear that any follow-up to Blood Dragon would not be as good as, or surpass, the original. On another level, one could argue that Hutchinson’s statements are commendable. The team wants to do something that is just as surprising and as original as Blood Dragon. Those are strong goals of integrity that one does not mind hearing from video game developers.

However, the news is still somewhat disappointing because Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon was so fantastic. The style worked so well, and the expansion was so much fun. In certain areas, I enjoyed playing Blood Dragon even more than the actual Far Cry 3 game. While I understand the stance that Ubisoft Montreal is taking for the next expansion, a spin-off or follow-up to Blood Dragon done in a similar style could still be just as original or surprising. The experience of Blood Dragon was simply so nostalgic and incredible, that I would really love to see a return to that style. It is no different from making a sequel to Far Cry 3. Far Cry 4 may not be a direct sequel to the events of Far Cry 3. The game features a new cast of characters, but it features a similar plot and character archetypes. So, something similar could be done for a new version of Blood Dragon.

Far Cry 4 is currently available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.
