The Witcher 3: Opening Cinematic Looks Fantastic

The release of the final game in The Witcher franchise is still months away, but the video of the game’s opening cinematic is out right now. CD Projekt Red dropped an incredible opening CG cinematic for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Entitled “The Trail.” Apparently, the new video cinematic will open the upcoming highly anticipated game. The Witcher 3 is one of my most anticipated game releases of next year; and the new cinematic, available below, looks absolutely fantastic.

The new video shows witcher Geralt of Rivia and his mentor, Vesemir, attempting to track Geralt’s long lost lover, the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg. The footage showcases Geralt and Vesemir tracking Yennefer in the aftermath of a violent, brutal battle. That is juxtaposed by the footage that exhibits what actually happened with Yennefer in the battle. It appears that Yennefer is caught between two enemy forces and is merely trying to escape the carnage.

Yennefer had a fairly minor presence in The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings, so I am glad to see she will take a more significant role for the final entry. The first game ended with Geralt learning of Yennefer’s fate and whereabouts. So, it makes sense that The Witcher 3 begins with Geralt searching for her. Yennefer is somewhere in Nilfgaard. Howeve, that could change. Either way, she is likely on a collision course with Geralt. I expect it will be a lot of fun when Geralt will be able to choose between a romance with Triss Merigold or Yennefer. I hope there will be some amusing, fun banter between the two sorceresses vying for Geralt’s affections. The Trail cinematic did a good job highlighting Yennefer’s sorceress powers and abilities. She is clearly a formidable mage.

The video also provided the first real look at Vesemir in the game. I assume Vesemir was the shrouded figure Geralt was traveling with in the previous CG cinematic trailer for the game that was released some time ago. I am extremely happy to see that Vesemir will likely have a prominent role in the story.

Based on the cinematic, CD Projekt Red really looks to be going all out with The Witcher 3. The opening cinematic looks epic. The developers have really combined a period piece with high concept fantasy in a wicked combination.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is due out on February 24, 2015 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC.
