The Evil Within: ‘The World Within’ and ‘Every Last Bullet’ Gameplay Videos Feature Major Reveals

2 min

Bethesda Softworks recently dropped new gameplay videos for The Evil Within. The new “The World Within” and “Every Last Bullet” videos (featured below) actually contain some major story revelations. I would not call many of these reveals spoilers. However, the video did clear up a good deal of background details about the game. The latest video confirms some elements that have been hinted at in previous demos and gameplay videos. As in the case with the “Every Last Bullet” gameplay video, it appears that Bethesda is serving up a series of introduction videos to the world of the game.

The Every Last Bullet video actually provides a name to the place in which the game is set: Crimson City; an appropriate name given the rather bloody content in the game. Although other videos suggest that Sebastian has been drawn into a world created within the mind of the game’s chief antagonist, Ruvik, it appears Ruvik’s nightmarish world is still set in Crimson City. I am curious to see how vast the Crimson City map will be after it has been leveled outside the mental institution. There is footage where it appears that players will have some time to explore the leveled Crimson City as Sebastian, after leaving the mental hospital.

Another new location depicted in the video is a safe haven dubbed “The Asylum.” The Asylum appears to be a safe area like the typewriter rooms in the Resident Evil games. This gives the first look at a seemingly benevolent and ghost-like Nurse character. Why would Ruvik’s insane, hellish world have a safe haven? Well, I played an earlier demo depicting Sebastian and Doctor Jimenez encountering and helping a young, harmless looking, but clinically insane, mental patient named Leslie. The catch? Young Leslie happens to look a lot like young Ruvik. My crackpot theory is that Ruvik also suffers from schizophrenia and perhaps is one and the same as Leslie. Ruvik is his evil side, and perhaps Leslie is a harmless splinter personality who does not want to do evil like Ruvik. It would be at least one valid explanation for a safe haven inside the insane world Ruvik has created.

I am happy to see there will be an upgrade system of sorts. The game stresses that weapons and bullets are a luxury in the game. However, a decent variety of weapons are at Sebastian’s disposal in the game. Considering there will be some pretty insane looking monsters to fight, I am sure some upgraded weapons will be of some help.

The Evil Within finally hits the shelves next week for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.
