Top 5 Time Periods Assassin’s Creed Should Explore Next

1 min

Assassin’s Creed is a video game franchise with a setting that is almost as much fun as its gameplay. The original took players back to the time of the Crusades. Since that time, numerous installments of the series have gone from the Italian Renaissance to the American Revolution. The first next-gen installment of the franchise, Assassin’s Creed Unity, takes players to the time of the French Revolution. Assassin’s Creed: Rogue, due out at the same time, is set with the Seven Years’ War as its backdrop. But what is next? As the franchise moves away from the family line of Desmond Miles, many other periods of history may be explored. Here is my list of time periods I would like to see the franchise explore:

5. The Great War

Up to this point, Ubisoft has generally avoided taking the Assassin’s Creed franchise into the 20th Century for the storyline that is not set in the present day. At some point, that will have to change. Sooner or later, the franchise will take players through the trenches of World War I. It is only a matter of time.

4. Victorian Era London

I want to see the Assassins and the Templars battling it out in Victorian London. London in the 1890s would be a tremendous locale for the franchise and would provide a great opportunity for an amazing open-world urban landscape. Basically, put the Assassins in the time of Jack the Ripper.

3. Roaring 20s New York City

An older version of New York would be a tremendous coup for the franchise, and one of the most exciting locations to explore yet. In Assassin’s Creed 3, players were able to explore Boston during the American War of Independence. Assassin’s Creed Unity has an open world setting of Paris, France during the French Revolution. At some point, I would love to see the franchise go to one of the greatest cities in the world.

2. World War II

The Templar Order is filled with rather nefarious bad guys. Wouldn’t those people align themselves with Adolf Hitler? The Templar Order favors order and control over personal freedom. That sounds right up the group’s alley to fall in with the Axis Powers

1. Warring States Period of Japan

The Sengoku period of Japanese history is a time of political intrigue and upheaval. In other words, it is a setting that is ripe for a potential Assassin’s Creed story. Who is to say the Assassin Brotherhood or the Templar never spread as far as the Orient? Japan would provide an original, new setting for the franchise and the chance to do something very different.
