Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell Hands-On Preview

Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell

I got my first chance to play the new Saints Row expansion, Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell at the GameStop Expo. Deep Silver had the Windows PC version of the game on hand to play through at the Square Enix booth. Fans of the irreverent, over-the-top style of the Saints Row franchise will likely be very satisfied with how the expansion for Saints Row 4 is turning out. In this new epilogue to Saints Row 4, Satan has kidnapped the Boss of the Saints to marry his daughter, Jezebel. Johnny Gat and Kinzie Kensington have to travel to Hell in order to save the Boss, and as Johnny Gat says, shoot Satan in the face.

The GameStop Expo demo did not have any of the actual story mode ready to play through–only free roam. Also, Kinzie Kensington is a playable character for the expansion, but only Johnny Gat was available for the demo. Right off the bat, you can test out the new angelic flight superpower. The flight mechanics actually work quite well and are very easy to get used to. The ability is very helpful to explore the map of the city of Hell, which looks like quite the huge and elaborate open-world sandbox. Gat is already armed with a number of awesome weapons to strike fear and terror into the heart of demons. My personal favorite was the Armchairmageddon. This weaponized La-Z-Boy features dueling gatling guns and heat-seeking smart missiles that will obliterate just about any target in seconds.

The graphics for the PC version look rather incredible. Textures appear smooth and incredibly detailed. The resolution of the visuals is top notch. The graphic quality and detail are definitely a step above the last console version of Saints Row 4.

One thing that was accessible for the demo was a mini-game called Survival. In Survival, the object is to get Satan’s attention in order to find the Boss. By doing so, Gat initiates a battle royale free-for-all with Satan’s police force and monsters. In Survival, it basically looks like a horde mode, where waves and waves of demons come and attack you, and Gat must fight them off. Luckily, having a large variety of hellish weapons at my disposal helped here. God’s Hammer was a nice melee weapon that has a lot of impact. Another gun fires deadly, plague-like locusts. I like the humorous touches to the weapons. Each one has a gag behind it.

Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell will be available for the Windows PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 on January 27, 2015. Also, the game will be bundled with the upcoming new-gen version of Saints Row 4, Saints Row 4: Re-Elected.
