The World Didn’t End, What to Look Forward to in 2013

Last of Us

Well, for some reason people decided to talk about Mayan prophecies for this year and how the Mayans had “predicted” that the world was going to end on December 21st, 2012. It all came about because the Mayan calendar ended at that point, and people who have been waiting for the end of times decided to use that as one of the many end-of-times dates. I’m alive, you are alive and there was no hellfire raining down on anyone that I’m aware of, so it is time to move on and look forward to 2013 in the world of gaming, because that is what we do.

So let’s run down what we have to look forward to.

The last year of the Sony PlayStation 3: This might not sound like something that is all-that exciting, but it is. We saw a lot of really cool games come out at the end of the lifecycles of the previous PlayStation consoles and developers really getting a handle on programming games for those systems. The PS3 has not been a joy for developers to develop on, but we’ve seen it explained as a strategy by Sony to keep the evolution of the games on the system while they develop the PlayStation 4. Regardless, there are some really cool games coming out with Naughty Dog’s “The Last of Us” being the leader of that pack.

Further development of the Wii U: Ah yes, the Wii U, the first of the newer generation of game consoles to hit the market and it hit the market with some cool new ideas and a lot of ports of games that have been out for a while on other, more powerful systems. The Wii U has yet to have its real “killer app” that people like to talk about, and fans are just waiting anxiously for Nintendo to get some form of first-party, must-have title into the wild and appease the world. There are still a lot of games on the line-up and lots more to come, let’s see what developers can do with some of the Wii U’s cool new features.

The actual next-generation of consoles: I think this is the biggest thing that we are all waiting for, sure the Nintendo Wii U happened, but we’ve already seen people running down its specs and saying that it is not as powerful as it should be to remain competitive. Of course, that isn’t what Nintendo is going for, but whatever. Sony and Microsoft are where the attention is shifting to now as 2013 should be the year where we at least get announcements from both companies. The talk right now is that the new Xbox will launch in 2013 and that the new PlayStation might launch in 2013 or possibly in 2014, depending on how the planets align.

New games: What would we do if it wasn’t for new games and new ideas? There are already some great games lined up for 2013 that have gamers talking and anticipating their release. Some of the big titles are The Last of Us, Battlefield 4, The Elder Scrolls Online, Grand Theft Auto V and many, many more. 2013 is shaping up to be an awesome year to be a gamer, so aren’t you glad that the world didn’t end?
