Running Tips for Beginners

2 min

Thinking about incorporating running into your exercise regime? Stop thinking about it – just start running! Before you set out, there are some things to keep in mind. Here’s our useful guide on what to wear, what to eat and how to get the best out of your performance. Ready, set, go!

What To Wear

You don’t need any fancy equipment to take up running. You just need shorts, a t-shirt, and some trainers to get going. That said; if you really want to get the most of your sessions, you must invest in high quality runners. They don’t need to be from a top brand but they do need to suit your running style. Our advice is to go to a good running store near you and let them measure you up for the right fit. Once you know what you need, feel free to shop around and find the best deals.

Top tip: When it comes to choosing clothes to wear, always dress for the second mile. This is great advice as you may feel cold setting off but having a heavy jumper on four miles in will leave you regretting the decision to take it with you.

Never Leave Injuries Untreated

Running is a high impact sport that can put pressure on your joints. Depending on how much mileage you’re doing, you may run into minor injuries that will niggle away and become worse if left untreated. These little niggles may end up putting a halt to your training routine so always get help with sport injuries as early as possible.

Top tip: Reach out to other runners in your area and get recommendations on the best physio. Put his/her number on speed dial in your phone so you always know who to call should injury come knocking.

What To Eat

What you put into your body before, during and after you run is so important. Food equates to fuel when you’re exercising so you need to create a plan that will replenish the calories you’re burning. To create the perfect nutrition plan, you need to ask yourself a series of questions. Are you getting enough protein? Are you eating enough pre and post workout? Do you feel hungry when you’re out on the run? It may take a little trial and error for you to work out what foods and the amount of food is best suited to your running plan.

Top tip: Carbs is the holy grail when it comes to speed and endurance so make sure your diet has plenty of them.

Make It Social

Are you struggling to stay committed? If so, why not join a social running club in your local area? Doing so might make it easier for you to get out and get motivated. You’ll make friends who are on a similar path to you in terms of goals so why not learn what you can from them? Most clubs offer members different training plans that allow them to reach a specific goal.

Do you want to run a faster 5k? Or are you trying to get motivated to run a full 5k without stopping? Whatever your goal, you’re sure to learn something from the above running tips for beginners.
