These Are the Signs That Someone Has a Drug Problem

2 min

It’s important to identify when your loved ones have a drug problem. If you don’t see it, you can’t offer meaningful help and support to them.

However, it can be very subtle, especially if they are still high functioning. Here are the signs to look for if you think someone is struggling with drug abuse.

They’re Having Financial Troubles

Does your loved one have more financial troubles? Are they coming to you for money without a real reason? Drugs are expensive, especially once you gain a tolerance.

If your loved one is in need of a lot of money, this can be a sign of a problem. The more serious version of this is losing their home, car, or other things they should value.

They Engage in Risky Behaviors

Behaviors that your loved one might not normally engage in can become more common as the addiction progresses. This doesn’t have to be as obvious as risky sexual behaviors or drunk driving. Even more common behaviors, like drinking games, can be signs of a problem.

They Neglect Responsibilities

Suddenly not keeping up with responsibilities is a common sign of a drug problem. It doesn’t have to be as dramatic as suddenly dropping out of college or getting fired. If you notice your loved one is suddenly not keeping up with their responsibilities it might be a good time to talk to them and ask what’s going on.

Sometimes approaching a family or friend can be difficult. Do you know how to perform an intervention? Having professional help might get you through this situation.

Look for Physical Signs

This can be a tricky one since the signs change a lot based on the addiction. Sudden weight loss is common in amphetamines, like cocaine, while marijuana and alcohol can cause sudden weight gain. However, if your loved one suddenly looks much worse, has track marks, a constant runny nose, or bloodshot eyes, it might be time to talk to them about going to rehab.

They Have Unhealthy Relationships

New negative friendships and romantic relationships can be a sign of a substance abuse problem. Friendships formed around a drug of choice tend not to be the most healthy, supportive ones. If you’re noticing someone starts turning to friendships that from the outside are unhealthy, this can be a warning sign.

They’re Becoming Isolated

On the other side of the coin, if your friend seems to be pulling away from everyone this can also be a substance abuse symptom. Especially if they also have new, unhealthy friendships, it can be a sign they’re pulling away from everyone who isn’t using.

This can be especially worrying behavior if they’ve pulled away from family. Skipping family functions can be a telling sign of drug addiction. Shame at their behavior can make them want to pull away.
