How Much CBD Oil Should You Give Your Dog?

The amount of CBD oil that should be given to your dog will depend on many different factors.

To choose the right type of CBD and the right dosage for your pet and you can refer to objective reviews, quality, see at Thehempire: https://www.thehempire.com/best-cbd-oil/dog-seizures/

Have they shown any sensitivity to CBD oil in the past? What is their weight? And, what are you treating them for? Dosage levels for things like behavioral issues and anxiety can be different than doses for illnesses like cancer or convulsions.

Before we get started, it should be noted that CBD is an overall well-tolerated remedy for your dog. So, even if you don’t get the dosage precisely right, side effects can be minimal or non-existent. Possible side effects that can happen include drowsiness or diarrhea (usually caused by too much oil, not the actual CBD).  It will most definitely not get your dog high.

If you notice any abnormal reaction occurring and you are concerned, contact your vet.

In terms of dosage, the standard rule of thumb would be a regular dose is 0.25 mg of CBD oil per pound, and a strong dose is 0.5 mg per pound.

For example:

The equation for a regular dose for a 20 lb dog is: 20 x 0.25 = 5 mg

The equation for a strong dose for a 20 lb dog is: 20 x 0.5 = 10 mg

Increasing or decreasing dosage will also depend on your desired outcome.

A regular dose is usually recommended if you are using the product for general wellness like immune function, easing symptoms of anxiety, minor aches, and pains, etc.

A strong dose is usually used for more severe issues like arthritis, inflammation, convulsions or seizures, cancer-related symptoms, or more severe nausea or anxiety.

Also, keep in mind that these recommended dosages are based on using a high-quality product. Be aware that’s some products out there have several factors that can impact the quality of the oil, including what carrier oils they use and the consistency of the strains used to produce the product.

In terms of how often the product should be administered, this will also depend on the reason that you are using it for your dog. If CBD oil is being used to alleviate symptoms associated with anxiety or a high-stress situation (i.e., flying or moving), then you’ll likely want to increase the dosage. If your dog has strong behavioral reactions (barking, shaking, nausea) when facing events like this, then a stronger dosage is recommended, and possibly even more.

As well, in some of these high-stress situations, it is common to administer the higher dosage right before the event takes place, then provide additional small doses for maintenance to keep your pup comfortable throughout.

On the other hand, if you are using CBD oil as a daily supplement to keep your dog’s system balanced, you can think of it more like their daily dose of vitamins – or even administer it as part of their daily supplement routine.

Please consult with your vet if you will be doing this, just in case any adverse effects can happen with the mixing of their existing supplements or medications. The recommended dose for this type of “well-being” maintenance would be the regular measurement.

In terms of things like consistent anxiety, cancer-related symptoms or seizures, every dog is going to have a different level of sensitivity to CBD, so depending on the severity of the condition, your dog’s dosage will really be more about trial and error. Start with the recommended regular dose, then increase or decrease from there, until you find what works.

Please remember that these are only recommendations.

Only you know your dog, so you’ll be able to determine if the dose being administered is too much or too little. This is usually evident in the dog behavior within an hour of ingesting CBD oil. If they are far more sluggish than usual – and that’s not what you want for them – then, pull back the dose a little.

Either way, a high-quality, natural CBD oil for dogs will be well-tolerated by your dog. So, fret not. Usually, the worst-case scenario is that you might find your pup to be a little extra sleepy until the dosage wears off – probably not the worst thing if they’re used to suffering from pain or stress anyway.
