Car and Technology: 5 Tech Trends That Enhance Road Safety

1 min

Most often than not, we hear people say that technology should never be used when driving. The use of cellphones was a factor in 14% of fatal crashes in the United States. However, most luxury car manufacturers nowadays have implemented technology that helps promote safe driving.

When purchasing a car, one of the most vital factors to look at is the safety feature. These features can help avoid fatal accidents by decreasing the rate of momentum, thus minimizing the force of the collision. Here are some of the recent technologies implemented by car brands today.

Blindspot Detection

This technology uses radar sensors or cameras and a voice alert to notify the driver once another car is on its blind spot. It reduces the lane-change accident rates. Both versions of blind spot detection technology can be installed by a professional if not included in a purchased car.

Adaptive Cruise Control

ACC or adaptive cruise control is available to most new cars today. It uses sensors and radars to maintain a safe distance from the car ahead. An advanced adaptive cruise control system automatically halts the car when the car in front stops and moves as soon as the traffic allows it.

Driver-Attention Monitor

This car safety feature focuses on the driver to aid in preventing accidents brought by drowsiness and distracted driving. According to 1800 injured, there are about 395,000 car accidents that occur in Miami alone. Thus, staying alert on the road is the best way to reduce the count of these unfortunate events.  The driver-attention monitor alerts the driver to take a break from driving to liven up.

Night Vision

The night vision feature is not yet available to most cars but is limited to luxury car brands such as Audi, Cadillac, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. It uses thermographic forward-facing cameras that watch for animals, pedestrians, and vehicles that are not easily seen at night. The infotainment screen shows an image of what is ahead.

Traffic Sign Recognition

A traffic sign recognition system uses cameras to recognize road signs and presents the information to the driver. The traffic sign is projected on the car’s infotainment system or head-up display. Other vehicles indicate the speed limit with a red line on the speedometer.

Car manufacturers continue to invent other safety features with the help of technology. It is expected that with proper use of technology in cars, vehicular accidents will significantly be reduced. Nonetheless, the safety of a trip is still in the hands of the driver.
