10 Predictions For 2020 To Get You Excited

3 min

We’re now in the final quarter of the year. 2020 is fast approaching, and a new year is always an exciting time to speculate. What will happen in tech, music, movies, and other places? Will this be a better or a worse year than 2019? Grab your horoscope and get ready, because we’re about to count down our top 10 predictions for 2020 to get you excited.

1. Self-driving cars will finally take off

We think the first commercially available self-driving car will finally hit the market in 2020. There are a lot of challenges to overcome here – not least the artificial intelligence and safety concerns many have about self-driving cars – but 2020 is the year that this new technology will finally take off. Get ready to experience life on the road without anyone behind the wheel!

2. The PlayStation 5 will kill it

We’re almost at the end of the eighth console generation. The PlayStation 4 has emerged victorious, enjoying a clear lead ahead of Microsoft’s Xbox One and Nintendo’s Switch. It’s hard to imagine the PS5 lagging behind in this area. With lead architect Mark Cerny making killer promises about the console, watch the PlayStation 5 crush the competition in 2020.

3. You keep your New Year’s resolution

That’s right: we’re so confident you’re going to keep your New Year’s resolution next year that we’re calling it as an official prediction. Around 80 percent of people fail to keep these promises year on year, but 2020 is going to be your year. Whether you’re planning to get fitter, eat healthier, or finally get your dream job, 2020 is going to be the year you achieve your goal.

4. AI will make leaps and bounds

We’re now pretty dependent on artificial intelligence. Everything from Alexa to driverless cars depends heavily on complex algorithms generated and followed by AI. Next year, we’re going to see even more leaps in AI and robotics. We might even see the first rudimentary robot sporting or gaming competitions emerge. We’re not talking chess, either; we’re talking esports. Watch this space!

5. Automation will continue to take over

In the EU alone, between 37 and 69 percent of jobs are currently under threat from automation. That number is only going to increase as AI becomes more complex. There are some jobs we think will never be overtaken by automation – film director, anyone? – but in general, expect to see more and more robots being able to do jobs previously held by humans. Take for example, you can buy in remote IT support already, but services like this are likely to become far more common in 2020 and beyond.

6. There will be a major cancer healthcare breakthrough

A BBC News report recently stated that over half of people diagnosed with advanced melanoma manage to outlive their diagnosis. That’s remarkable, but it doesn’t stop there. Scientists recently discovered a new breakthrough for cancer treatment. We think 2020 is going to be the year that healthcare professionals make a serious breakthrough in treating and preventing cancers.

7. Electric cars will take over

There’s a huge range of electric cars on the way for 2020. Mark our words when we say that these vehicles are going to absolutely dominate the landscape. With increasing worries about climate change, many will turn to more environmentally-friendly vehicular options, and electric vehicles are the perfect choice. Many public transport networks already use them.

8. Laser weaponry will revolutionise war

It might sound like something from a science-fiction film, but many people believe that laser weaponry is going to significantly impact the ways in which wars are fought. There will be increased demand for this weaponry, of course, but it’s also got the potential to limit civilian casualties. 2020 will be the year that laser weaponry becomes relevant in modern military matters.

9. Dune finally gets it right

David Lynch’s adaptation of Dune is…flawed at best. It means well, but it’s a sprawling and bloated attempt to capture the influential prose of Frank Herbert’s original novel. A new version of the movie is on the way, though, and it’s being directed by Arrival head honcho Denis Villeneuve. We reckon 2020’s Dune is finally going to bring the misunderstood story to an appreciative audience.

10. The vegan population will soar

More and more people are turning vegan. In the UK alone, the vegan population is predicted to skyrocket by around 300 percent. If we follow that trend and apply it to the rest of the world, then the vegan population is going to massively increase. It makes sense; as we mentioned earlier, many people are more interested in living conscious lifestyles, and veganism is seen as the apex of that philosophy.

These are just some of the predictions we have for 2020. We don’t have any insider knowledge (apart from being massive Dune fans). What are yours? Did we miss anything out? Do you think we’re wrong about anything?
