CBD oil in the News: 5 things to know about right now

3 min

The CBD cannabidiol industry is a fast-mover. Right now, there are five big movements to be aware of, as discussed below:

Alliance between World Hemp Oil and National Farma announced

World Hemp Oil, one of the leading manufacturers and distributors of CBD oil, recently announced an alliance with National Farma, a Texas company.

National Farma recently made a major breakthrough in their proprietary water-soluble CBD technology and World Hemp Oil will be its distributor to other product manufacturers. They will also distribute other bulk products that feature National Farma’s water soluble CBD to retailers and wholesalers.

The proprietary SonShear technology and emulsification formula used by National Farma has allowed them to create bioavailable CBD of the highest quality. The CBD has nano-emulsions with an oil droplet size of fewer than 50 nanometers allowing for up to 10 times more absorption of the beneficial properties of CBD.

Water-soluble CBD is odorless and tasteless and can be included in an enormous variety of products, especially those that are clear.

The beneficial molecules in CBD oil remain hidden in the oil drops and this typically reduces their absorption to below 10%, while it is believed that the new SonoShear technology allows for 90% higher absorption from CBD supplements by the body.

At the same time, World Hemp announced that it will be sourcing CBD-rich hemp from American farmers instead of the imported European hemp. This move was decided upon since the passing of the Federal 2018 Farm Bill, which now allows farmers to grow hemp legally nationwide. Previously, hemp was classified as a Schedule 1 drug.

Terravidaonline.com and IHP partnering to bring ZERO THC to American consumers:

Terravidaonline.com is a wholesaler and direct supplier of the biggest range of CBD cannabidiol products in the US. They are often seen in the press, hanging out with Doctors who provide live commentary on CBD safety – these folks are advocates of non-GMO certified products and certainly will not sell anything that has been grown in China, warning of serious issues with contaminated soil. IHP, aka Industrial Hemp Partners, is a fast-growing global supplier of CBD isolate – many brands on American shelves are made with isolate from this company. These two companies are now working together to enable retailers to sell ZERO THC products, as well as LOW THC – depending on consumer preferences and the state in which it is sold.

Canadian Consumers and Industry want improvements to regulations on CBD

All phytocannabinoids, including CBD, are treated as drugs in Canada. The Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance (CHTA) and the Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) recently called for improvements to these regulations which have resulted in shortages in CBD-based products. The result of these shortages is that there is a growing illegal market of unregulated products of unknown origin, potency and purity.

The restrictions to the use of locally grown cannabis were a result of the move by Health Canada that simultaneously added them to the Prescription Drug List (PDL), and to Schedule 2 of the Natural Health Product Regulations.

In a white paper, representing 2,000member companies, CHTA and CHFA call for the smart regulation of CBD.

In the white paper they point out why regulations over CBD need to be improved:

  • No significant risk is posed to human health by the use of CBD
  • Canada has the risk profile to establish global leadership within the CBD market because of its unique position
  • The illegal cannabis market is encouraged by the current regulations.

Cannabis infused snack availability on the rise

Mondelez, the makers of Oreo are looking for ways to add CBD-infused snacks to their product line. In a recent interview, CEO Dirk Van Put, said that the company is getting ready, but want to do it right and stay within what is legal at this point.

According to Van Put, the company is not considering adding the non-psychoactive compound to its family brands but is looking to add it to other products, some of which will be newly developed ones.

Even though many start-ups have already brought out CBD-infused foods and drinks, larger companies are waiting for regulations from federal health authorities.

Since December, when the New Farm Bill was signed, there has been a surge of CBD products on the market. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration only allows its use in products such as creams, lotions and supplements while it may not be used in foods and beverages. Congress has been pressuring the FDA to make a decision, with the regulator now planning to begin public meetings as of next month.

Everyone is excited to see what the first offerings will be from the larger food companies like Mondelez and Coca Cola.

Meanwhile, in Birmingham, UK….

A CBD beverage, by a company called Green Monkey, is outselling water at a rate of three cans to two. This is according to one of the investors in the company who is the owner of a Midlands pharmacy chain.

The company produces oil filled capsules and topical balms and according to its owners, they are the first to produce a CBD fizzy drink in the UK.

The doses of CBD oil in the fizzy drink are very low for now at least, that will keep consumers safe. However, more research into its consumption in foods and drinks is needed.
