10 Things That Can Go Wrong During Mercury Retrograde

2 min

Mercury Retrograde happens three times this year. It happened in March, and it will happen in July (the month of Cancer) and November (the month of Scorpio). When a planet is retrograde, that planet is flipped upside down (figuratively speaking). It is a difficult period for many people to go through, but it is a necessary evil to overcome these obstacles in order to grow as humans. Here are 10 things that can—and probably will—go wrong.

1. New Projects

Don’t begin any new venture during this period. Beginning new projects, whether it’s home, work or personal related, only leads to intense frustration. Instead, use your energies to close up any deals and revise/edit any standing contracts. It’s a period for putting “open” projects to a close. New projects and ventures can wait.

2. Memory Loss

As if remembering a million and one things a day wasn’t hard enough, some people will be more forgetful than usual. Even you. Mercury is the planet that “governs our intellectual and logical mind,” says Vedic astrologer Griffin Damron. “The detail-oriented mind moves in the wrong direction.”

3. Moving

Appearances are deceiving. Prior to the period, people may seem alright. If you’re planning on moving to a new home, apartment or looking for a roommate, hold off. Peoples’ behaviours change during this period, and who you see before the retrograde may be someone else when Mercury is direct. I’m not suggesting a drastic alteration in behaviours or psychology; this time puts a lot of stress on people who are moving or looking for new accommodations.

4. Miscommunication

Mercury is the planet of communication and social exchange. During retrograde, miscommunication becomes a big problem. It gets hard to stay on the same page with people. Because Mercury is a mobile planet—one that’s always on the move—our ideas and thoughts will change just as frequently. Expect a heap of misunderstandings. This only gives you the chance to learn how to communicate more directly and clearly.

5. Relationships

A lot of arguments happen more than the standard norm. Couples (or friends) who have communication problems will not like this period. Breakups are common during Mercury retrograde, and it is hard to survive them. This underlies the importance of refraining from making rash decisions.

6. Tricky Contracts

Because communication between people may be muddled and murky, important information may be left out of contracts. Information that could have saved your hide. Refrain from signing contracts of any sort until Mercury is direct again, when errors are less likely to be made.

7. Cut Down on Traveling

For one reason or another, an extraordinary amount of last-minute flight cancellations usually happens when Mercury is retrograde. Meetings are postponed and transportation services are delayed. Expect this to happen and take extra precautions when you’re travelling.

8. Sleeping

Some victims might suffer a few sleepless nights while Mercury is retrograde. This is because this period of time is believed to strengthen the power of sleep deprivation and disturbances. Sleep expert Chris Brantner says, “You’re more likely to have strange dreams and sleepwalk.”

9. Overspending

As if sticking to a budget wasn’t hard enough. Technology has a tendency to kick the bucket when Mercury is in retrograde. Which means keeping big tech purchases (such as that new phone or purchasing components for upgrading your desktop computer) should be put on hold until Mercury is direct.

10. Avoid Agreements

If you can, avoid negotiating agreements or making huge decisions. Do not sign any form of a legal document whatsoever. When Mercury goes direct, anything you put into writing during retrograde has the potential to be heavily revised.

Conclusion

Mercury retrograde doesn’t mean you stop living your life. It gives you opportunities to anticipate things that will go wrong and figure out how to create back-up plans. It’s also a fantastic time to take a step back from your daily routine. This shift gives you a time to look at who you are as a person, and if the life you lead prior to the shift was the life you truly wanted.
