John Romero is something of a legend in the game’s industry, having been the designer for such pioneering games as Doom and Quake, and introducing the world to the concept of Deathmatch multiplayer gaming. Something the big man is less associated with however is RPGs. Despite that, he has teamed up with Wizardry designer (and wife) Brenda Braithwaite at his new studio Loot Drop to begin a Kickstarter for an old-school RPG, called Old School Role-Playing Game.
The game is set to feature turn-based combat, a massive fantasy world, and a versatile character-levelling system. The player can create a party of up to four playable characters with whom to explore the ‘richly detailed world, home to unique, dangerous and sometimes crafty creatures who may be friend or foe.’
Old School Role-Playing Game will feature multiple endings for players, but if they reach the stretch goal of $1.9m (base goal is $1m) then they will create a second game with the same campaign which will be designed by Anachronox’s Tom Hall. What’s more, the ending of Old School RPG will have an effect on the beginning of the subsequent game!
For pledging just $15, people will get access to the full digital download of the game on PC or Mac, as well as in in-game reward pack. Pledge just $10,000, and you a plethora of goodies. Among them 25 digital copies of the game, a day at Disney World with John Romero, Brenda Brathwaite and Tom Hall, and being made a Boss in the game. It’s big money, but at the time of writing one crazy person has already made the kingly donation.
