With Resident Evil 6 trailers everywhere and Capcom’s insane promotional events running rampant, Resident Evil: Damnation has likely slipped under your radar, just like it has mine.
According to Amazon, its available now on DVD, Blu-ray and digital copy. Apparently it released on September 25, and digitally on September 15 via Xbox Live, PSN, and Zune.
Damnation is the new CGI movie and sequel to 2008′s Degeneration. It’s not to be confused with Paul W. S. Anderson’s awful live-action movies, although you could be forgiven for any confusion considering all the RE subtitles ending in “-tion” – Retribution, Revelations and Degeneration. Speaking of Retribution, the new live-action film, that also released last week. That slipped my mind too, but I’m waging that’s a good thing.
Unlike Anderson’s movies, Degeneration and Damnation are canonical and fit inside the official Resident Evil timeline.
Amazon’s plot summary reads:
United States Special agent Leon S. Kennedy sneaks into a small Eastern European country to verify rumors that Bio Organic Weapons (B.O.W.s) are being used in war. Right after his infiltration, the US government orders him to leave immediately. Determined to uncover the truth, Leon ignores the order and enters the battlefield to end the chain of tragedies caused by the B.O.W.s.
Degeneration, aside from some lip-syncing issues, is a pretty solid movie once you get past the fact that you’re watching a 90 minute cutscene. Based on that and the current 4.5/5.0 rating on Amazon I have high hopes for Damnation‘s quality, but not so much for its sales. If I, a long-term Resi fan and someone who writes news daily, had no idea that this released, how many other people have forgotten about it completely?
It seems like a perfect marketing strategy to release it close to the release of RE6, one of the biggest game’s of the year, but it seems that too much promotion went into the game and not enough for the movie. The only trailer I think I’ve seen was the teaser trailer upon the movie’s announcement two years ago.
Consider this a PSA for everyone interested in watching the movie, assuming I’m not the only crazy one who forgot. I’d quite like to watch it soon myself.
Are you RE fans as surprised as me, and will you be picking this up?
