Dust 514 remains something of an enigma. While the futuristic online shooter has already received plenty of press coverage and released a Beta version, it’s still uncertain how the game’s cross-over with the EVE Online universe will work. An extra detail that we do now seem to know about the game however, is that it’s likely to be released in October.
Speaking with Fox, Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton has strongly suggested that Dust 514 will be dropping on Playstation 3 gamers next month. Tretton had this to say:
We do have free-to-play games… A game called Dust 514 is a full-blown first-person shooter available on PlayStation 3 that not only allows you to play against your friends on PS3, but also against people on the PC.
Tretton went on to confirm that the game is ‘coming out next month.’
This is exciting news for those who have been following the game’s development. While Dust is fundamentally a large-scale futuristic online shooter, its USP is the fact that players in it can connect with EVE Online players on the PC. EVE players can call in orbital strikes and will have a direct impact on the currency and market in Dust. The decisions made by EVE players will have a huge impact on whether you find yourself fighting for a winning or losing side.
Having played the Dust beta, I can’t really comment on the cross-play functionality, but can say that the scale of the game, vehicles and character customisation options are impressive. While it’s still a bit rough around the edges and could give more guidance to new players, the ambition and potential of the game is huge. Roll on October!
