Mortal Kombat X: Erron Black Looks Like Game’s Best New Character

Mortal Kombat X

NetherRealm Studios finally revealed new footage of one the game’s brand new Kombatants, Erron Black. The character was initially depicted in the prequel comic book series based on the game. His character design and model was featured in one of the story trailers, but he was not confirmed as a playable character for the roster until this week. The Erron Black character looks like the best and most exciting new character on the entire roster. In addition, it appears that Erron Black is already on a path to becoming a beloved fan favorite for Mortal Kombat philes.

Erron Black brings something unique to the franchise and roster. To the best of my knowledge, the Mortal Kombat franchise has never quite had a character like Black. Obviously, Black’s design is based on western gunslinger antihero archetypes. The franchise has never truly realized a slick western gunslinger before. Erron Black has a wicked design and some cool attacks using his fancy shooting techniques. In his X-ray attack, Black shoots a bullet with his opponent’s name carved into it that ricochets across the skeleton, breaking dozens of bones. It looks awesome. His Fatality attack features Black using some strange type of grenade, containing powder inside, that blows out your eyeballs and other orifices. That Fatality especially looks like nasty fun.

I like Black’s design. His face is masked, and he wears a neat cowboy hat with bullets on it. Erron Black’s style seems to be inspired by Clint Eastwood’s character from Sergio Leone’s spaghetti western films and Roland Deschain from The Dark Tower book series by Stephen King. This is not the type of character design usually seen in Mortal Kombat, so that is why it is exciting to have someone like Black. He is a cool gunslinger cowboy rather than a ninja or martial artist. The variety, design and play style of someone like Erron Black is good progression for the franchise. Frankly, I am happy with the nice amount of new characters the game offers alongside the returning ones. The first Mortal Kombat games were appealing, mostly because they were different from games such as Street Fighter. So, that tradition should hold true with new installments like Mortal Kombat X.

Mortal Kombat X finally hits the shelves on April 14 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC. The other PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions will not be available until June 30.
