Batman Arkham Knight: ‘Officer Down’ Video Breakdown

Batman Arkham Knight

The release date for Batman Arkham Knight has again been delayed. Fortunately, right after the announcemnet of the latest delay, Rocksteady Studios was nice enough to release a new extended gameplay video to tide over fans. It was a smart strategy. Rocksteady softened the blow of the delay with the release of the new gameplay footage. The release claims that the new video features footage that was captured directly from a PlayStation 4 system, and not a dev kit.

The new video features a trademark conversation between Batman and Jim Gordon atop of a building. Batman has just landed on the building after answering Gordon’s Bat-signal call. Gordon gets off the phone with his daughter, Barbara Gordon, aka Oracle. Gordon explains that a getaway military vehicle was identified, and it is currently the only lead to Scarecrow. Gordon is concerned that the Scarecrow will unleash a chemical weapon in Gotham City. Batman promises that he will not let it happen. As he often does, Batman leaves right when Gordon turns to speak with him again. Batman then contacts Oracle, who tracks the stolen military vehicle and sends the signal to the Dark knight.

Next, Batman intervenes and saves a downed GCPD officer from getting brutalized by a group of thugs. Batman saves him and grapples into the air with the officer just as the stolen vehicle attempts to collide with the two. Then, Batman gives chase to the vehicle with the Batmobile, and the footage offers a sample of vehicular combat with Batman’s ride.  Eventually, Batman stops the getaway vehicle and interrogates the thug. Thankfully, Batman is able to obtain an uncontaminated sample of Scarecrow’s new fear toxin from the thug, and he sends it to Oracle. Batman goes back on the hunt to protect Gotham as the video ends.

The new gameplay and combat footage looks impressive. I am happy to see that the Combat Summary feature from Batman Arkham Origins was translated over to Batman Arkham Knight. This is one of the ideas Origins did well, and I wanted to see it in the next Rocksteady game. Hopefully, the training type challenge missions can be accessed during the main game, and not just separately. The combat tweaks, such as the multi-fear takedown, look good in action.

The expanded sandbox for Gotham City looks amazing. The latest video provides some nice, new footage of Batman gliding around Gotham City. The new open-world sandbox for Gotham City looks amazing. Fans will likely have a lot of fun exploring all of the nooks and crannies of the playground.

The graphics and visuals captured directly from the PlayStation 4 look promising. I realize the video says it was directly captured from the PS4; so I hope that means it will look just as good on my high definition, 1080p flatscreen TV set. Batman Arkham Knight will be released on June 23. The game will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC.
