Katamari keeps on moving and growing, as a comic rendition of the wacky Katamari series is rolling in very soon from Buttersafe comic creators Alex Culang and Raynato Castro. It will debut on September 17th as an online and free-to-read print, updating every Monday and Wednesday at 5am PST on the website ShiftyLook.

If you’ve never heard of the series before, then you’ve been fortunate enough to avoid all of my terrible puns in the first paragraph. But you’ve also been missing out! It started back in 2004 with Katamari Damacy, a game that was (and still is) unique and unlike anything else in the industry.  With its accessibility, innovative gameplay, weird but wonderful Japanese humour and colourful, crazy worlds its a damn fun game that has spawned seven sequels over various platforms. You roll a ball over a landscape, collecting junk that sticks and makes your sphere increase in size over time, allowing you to pick up bigger and bigger objects and reach new areas. Each level has a different theme and you must meet different specifications and parameters from rules set by the King of All Cosmos. Simple yet brilliant.

As you can gather and as fans already know, the franchise isn’t known for a complex plot. It does sport much bizarre and insane humor throughout the games, however, so a light-hearted spin-off in comic form is very exciting.

Destructoid scored an exclusive preview of the comic, featuring the protagonist Prince and the King. As ever, the Prince is being unfairly undermined by his strict father, the King. The King’s arrogance makes its welcome return, as he describes his handsome face and bold chin. He then barfs a rainbow at his son, apparently - sounds about right!

The creators will be attending Comic-Con in New York running October 11-14 to reveal more details. There are also some exclusive artwork and a design for an upcoming T-shirt. Check it out!
