If there is one thing that people strongly dislike and don’t understand, it is when a game developer chooses to not only implement future DLC for their game, but when the DLC content is already available on the game disc when it ships. It makes sense, because the whole point of “downloadable content” is that you, well, you download it. On-disc DLC is nothing new, but has really become the scourge of the gaming world over the past few years, even if its free. Gamers understand needing to unlock things in a game, being rewarded for playing the game, but downloading a teeny tiny file to unlock content that should already be available is downright madness.

Well, it appears that this madness will be a part of Tekken Tag Tournament 2, released in North America on September 11th. Gamers who received the game early got to work datamining the disc, and the results were uncovering six new characters which were not included in the game and are not unlockable characters. The characters are Dr. Bosconovitch, original Tekken Tag Tournament boss character Unknown, a skinnier Bob, Xiaoyu’s classmate Miharu, Emilie de Rochefort’s butler Sebastian and Lee’s other persona, Violet.

These characters were not announced anywhere, but look to be additions to the lineup of DLC characters to be released in the future. The good part is that Namco has stated in the past that they do not plan on offering downloadable characters for a charge, instead they will be free. It is great that they are offering these characters for free, but it is still confusing as to why they’d include characters on-disc for future DLC if there would be no charge for them. It also makes me wonder what else is stored on this disc and if plucky dataminers will get back to work soon.
