Batman Arkham City: One of the Last Easter Eggs Finally Revealed?

Way back in May 2012, Batman Arkham City game director Sefton Hill revealed that there were still about “three or four” secret Easter eggs for the video game that had yet to be found. It seems that Rocksteady Studios got tired of waiting and finally revealed at least one of those to the public. Or, at least one of them was teased. The reveal includes a special hidden embedded message from the Calendar Man, aka Julian Day. The message is a chilling monologue from Day. In addition, if players read between the lines, they could interpret hidden meanings in the message.

Much credit goes to the Batman Arkham Videos YouTube account, which was able to crack the puzzle put out by Rocksteady through the dummy account, JG Jour. The letters JG stand for “Julian Gregory,” the first and middle names of Julian Gregory Day. Jour is the French word for “Day.” In Arkham City, Calendar Man is incarcerated in a prison cell in the basement of the Gotham City courthouse. Each time players would visit and initiate conversations with the Calendar Man on specific days or holidays, it would set off unique, grim and macabre messages. However, there is one particular message that players had never uncovered–until now. Batman Arkham Videos cracked the puzzle and created a video of the full hidden message (available below).

Players can speed up the process by manually entering in the date in the settings of a video game console menu. The hidden message with Calendar Man is playable on December 13, which marks the day Rocksteady Studios was founded. When the hidden message from Calendar Man is activated, he says the following to Batman: “Well, well, well. And on today of all days. Do you remember my early work? Flawed, but it showed promise. Just like you. As your skills improved, I perfected mine. Starting with seasons and moving through the weeks, I became stronger, my work more…elaborate. Days were the secret Batman, and the end of days is coming.”

It seems that Calendar Man is foreshadowing the events that will take place in Batman: Arkham Knight. The idea would not be so unusual. Arkham City had hidden messages from Scarecrow, where Scarecrow proclaimed he would return to get revenge on Batman. Thus far, Scarecrow appears to be one of the masterminds, if not the mastermind, behind the threat against Gotham City in Batman: Arkham Knight. In addition, if you read between the lines of Calendar Man’s message, the monologue has a double meta meaning. It is almost as if Calendar Man is creating a dialogue about Rocksteady Studios and the developer’s history with the Batman franchise–the games which became even better as they went along. Calendar Man talks about the “end of days,” well Arkham Knight marks the end of Rocksteady’s involvement with the Batman franchise.

I wonder if this is the final Easter egg for the game; or perhaps, there might be some more hidden in the game that have still not been found. Batman: Arkham Knight hits the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC.
