The LittleBigPlanet games have been a very interesting case study in what happens when you release an insanely fun platformer game and allow for its players to be creative. The level design aspects of LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet 2 made for what seems like unlimited replay value for players, be it from creating your own levels or going online and downloading new levels created by other players and giving them a whirl. Some created levels emulate other popular games, some completely change how you would play the first two LittleBigPlanet games. The release of LittleBigPlanet Karting is looking to be no different, as the fine folks at United Front and Media Molecule are looking to give the same sort of experience in their upcoming kart racing game.
There will, without a doubt, be many that compare LittleBigPlanet Karting to the series Mario Kart, which is a long-running kart racing series that was attached to one of the most successful series of platformer games ever, but LBP Karting will without a doubt be different. That is what made the LittleBigPlanet games a success and fan favorites; that they took a fresh look at the platforming genre and didn’t immediately try to go out and create some goofy character in hopes of it becoming memorable like Mario, instead they gave us Sackboy. What’s funny is, by having the main character just be a little, plain bean bag sack that you could customize, they created a great new character lost in a colorful and unique world that resonates with players. Their foray into karting is exciting, as we’ve seen what they could do with a genre like platformer where we’ve seen so many try to start new IPs and fail.
Today Sony released a new trailer for LittleBigPlanet Karting, and it features the level editor which will be included with the game as well as some players who created popular levels for previous games using said editor.
LittleBigPlanet Karting will be released on November 6th in the US, 7th in the EU and 9th in the UK for the Sony PlayStation 3.
