Sony Worldwide Studios chief Shuhei Yoshida today talked a little more openly about The Last Guardian and why it is taking so long to develop. According to Yoshida, the game has not been shown off recently because there are a ton of technical issues that need to be resolved. Yoshida had this to say:
“The team is still working on it very hard, there are certain technical issues they’ve been working on, That’s the period of time when the game, looking from the outside, doesn’t seem to be making much progress. But internally there is a lot of work going into creating the title.”
Apparently the technical issues were much bigger than anyone expected, because at one point the game was playable and Sony prematurely started looking into producing the game. Yoshida went on to say:
“We had the game playable. At one point we felt that it would be produced for a certain time period. That was the time we prematurely talked about the launch window. But it turned out the technical issues are much harder to solve. So the engineering team had to go back and re-do some of the work they had done.”
Finally Yoshida went on to confirm that the game is still a PS3 game and has not been moved over to their next generation console, ”The game is developed on PS3″. Recently some people were starting to believe the game might be moved over to the PS4 as maybe a launch title to help push sales. However, Yoshida squashed those rumors, but we are still no closer to knowing when The Last Guardians might actually be released.
This is much better news than last week, when we learned that Sony had abandoned the Last Guardian trademark. But apparently that is nothing to be worried about because a day later Sony confirmed that the game was still very much in development. Now today we know for certain that the game is still a PS3 developed game, but unfortunately we still have no release window as Team Ico seems to be still having major technical issues.
