Epic Games has been a busy company the past few weeks, first they set up a new studio in Baltimore with former Big Huge Game employees. And today they have announced they have bought Gears of War: Judgement developer People Can Fly. Epic has had a previous relationship with the company as they worked with People Can Fly on Bulletstorm last year.
Epic Games VP Mark Rein had this to say about the purchase of People Can Fly ”We doubled down on People Can Fly”. He went on to say ”It was something we always hoped to do.”
However, it wasn’t all good news as three team members from the People Can Fly studio promptly left after the news broke that the studio was being bought by Epic Games. The three people who left include studio founder Adrian Chmielarz along with top artists Andrzej Poznanski and Michal Kosieradzki.
The breakup does however seem to be amicable as Chmielarz clarified he would still be working with Epic Games on some apparent future project. Chmielarz stated: ”We will be helping [Chmielarz] with some future announcements,” he said. “Our paths will be crossing again.” Then afterward he later updated his twitter account:
“One of [more info coming soon] Gears fans, you’re going to love Judgment. It’s in great hands. And don’t worry, you’ll hear about my plans soon enough.”
Like I said before, these two companies have a long working relationship and this should work out for both sides. They have both worked on the Gears of War franchise together and Gears of War: Judgement shouldn’t be effected by the loss of three team members. It will be very interesting to see People Can Fly version of the Gears of War franchise.
I am a little concerned about the over saturation of the franchise as I feel some people might be a little burned out on the Gears of War saga. How many of you have Gears of War: Judgement at the top of your most anticipated lists for next year; or are you burned out on the franchise and feel you don’t need to play Gears of War: Judgement?
