Sonic Boom Is Going To Include 2D Segments With A Few “Twists”

Sonic Boom, the reboot Sonic The Hedgehog game launching later this year on Nintendo consoles, is going to feature a slightly different gameplay experience than its predecessors, an experience more focused on exploration rather than pure speed.

This doesn’t mean that the game will not retain some elements from the other entries of the series. According to SEGA Producer Stephen Frost, the game is going to include 2D elements in some form or another. These elements are going to feature some unique twists.

“As with most Sonic titles, where there is generally a mix of 3-D and 2-D-based gameplay. Sonic Boom will be no different. Given the focus on exploration of this new world for Sonic, we generally wanted to focus on 3-D. However, given our desire to deliver a “familiar but new” experience, you can bet that elements like the 2-D-based gameplay will certainly show up, but maybe with a few twists.”

The new gameplay features definitely aren’t the only thing that’s twisting everything we know about Sonic The Hedgehog. Sonic Team boss Takeshi Iizuka has been shocked by the new characters’ designs, as revealed by Big Red Button’s Bob Rafei.

Sonic Boom will launch on Wii U and 3DS later this year. Last month a rumor surfaced online, revealing that Sonic Boom is going to be released during May. The news came from a Tomy representative attending the Toy Fair 2014. However, with May getting closer and without confirmation, it doesn’t really look like the game will be out in two months.
