So there has been a lot of talk around the web about who will get the cover of Madden 13’. If you don’t already know, ESPN’s SportsNation is hosting the Madden 13 Cover Vote to decide who the lucky guy will be. Don’t hold your breath though, nothing will be set in stone until late April when they reveal who will succeed Brown’s running back Peyton Hillis for that trademark photo. Apparently behind the glorified Tim Tebow in a tie for second place is Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and Patriots tight-end Rob Gronkowski who posted a video on Youtube telling his fans why he should be the lucky guy to grace the cover. In the home video he said:
“I’m going to tell you why I should be voted for the Madden 13 cover this year,” he said excitedly. “It’s just not because of the dedication on the field, but it’s also because of the dedication off the field. Hard workers at all times. Let’s go bro! Doing curls, busted ankle, cast on it, it don’t stop me!”
He along with Wes Welker were chosen to represent the Patriots in the overall fan vote, on March 21st the competition will be narrowed down from 64 to 32 candidates so look forward to the hype. Although the games have only been mildly altered over the past few years, my guess is that you will definitely see some cross-platforming with the newer handhelds systems. You can already pre-order Madden 13 for PS3, Wii, Xbox 360 and most notably the PS Vita but sorry Nintendo handheld fans you won’t be seeing this game for the 3DS following not-so-great Madden Football which unsurprisingly only presented players with the bare-bones of what they would have expected elsewhere.
Now this series has been out for awhile and as I said earlier, the changes have been mild at best. Sure the rules change in football but what else can EA offer besides a simple tweak in mechanics and some in-zone dance moves? There is undoubtedly a lack of spark, let’s think about the Madden 2012 franchise mode. You play a game or five (on 5 minutes a quarter) and you might start looking at the clock, then you hit the sim button. There has been a few complaints among fans about the games lack of depth outside of Superstar Mode. You can only rebalance game mechanics for so long before things begin to feel dull, the reality of it is that the fans will buy the FIFAs and the NHLs as long as they keep making them. And if you play franchise mode long enough you will start to see people dressed like characters straight out of the Jetsons, not really but hey why not? There is no such thing as a game that is too realistic (unless we start talking about Gran Turismo) but you can never be too creative, we’ll see what happens. The game is expected to drop around August 28-30 this year but you never know what can happen between now and then, my advice to you is keep your fingers crossed and hope that whoever you want on the cover will be there when the time comes.
