THQ is trying to turn things around, hell at this point they are just trying to stay afloat. Therefore, today they made the decision to stop work on the Guillermo Del Toro video game InSane. The game was originally announced way back in 2010, and basically has not been heard from since. It was being worked on by Del Toro and Saints Row developer Volition.

This news was announced today at a investors meeting by THQ president Jason Rubin. Rubin made the announcement that no further pre-production work would be done by THQ on InSane. As a result all the rights to the franchise have been returned to Guillermo Del Toro. The game was set to be a trilogy initially, but who knows what their plans are now.

Strictly speaking the game hasn’t been officially cancelled, THQ will just not be publishing it and Volition will not be continuing work on the game. Meaning Del Toro will have to switch developers if he hasn’t already done so, in addition to finding a new publisher as well.

InSane was not scheduled to be released anytime soon, as Del Toro himself said last year the game was at least two to three years away from being done. Which means any of InSane’s sequels would probably be released on next generation consoles, assuming they actually release the game now.

I can’t really say I blame THQ for doing this, considering how long the game has been in production and they are still at least one year away from the game being done. THQ just doesn’t have the resources right now to invest in risky projects like InSane or Itagaki’s Devil’s Third. I was excited to see this horror sandbox game from Del Toro but at this point I wouldn’t be surprised if the game never comes to light.

As of right now there is no news on whether Del Toro will move forward with the project or it will be out right cancelled. Hopefully we will hear that another company will develop and produce InSane but right now we have to assume the game is stuck in development limbo.
