Dragon’s Dogma is a very ambitious game, it was a brand new open world fantasy RPG released less than seven months after Skyrim. You know one of the biggest and best selling fantasy RPGs ever released. However, it seems the risk paid off for Capcom as Dragon’s Dogma has officially shipped 1.05 million units.
A new financial report today shows that Capcom’s big risk in releasing a western style RPG has paid off big time in Japan. Not only that but Capcom as a company has flourished as their profits have increased “300% to £11 million ($17 million) for the quarter, with total revenue of £151 million ($237 million)”. The only disappointment seems to be that Dragon’s Dogma did not succeed as well as expected outside of Japan, according to the announcement:
“In this business segment, Dragon’s Dogma, the first large-scale open world game for Capcom, struggled abroad, but its popularity in the more profitable domestic market exceeded expectations…”
To me it is surprising to see a western themed RPG do so well in Japan and not so well in the west. I know Japan has some similar western like RPGs that fairly well over there, but still it is nice to see a new western style RPG sell so well in Japan. However, it is a little disappointing the game didn’t meet expectations over here which could potentially hurt us when Capcom decides if they should release the sequel out west.
Then again Dragon’s Dogma may be a slow burn type game where sales will pick up over time because of word of mouth. The game only sold a little over 90,000 copies the first month it was released and is now up to 1.05 million. I think some of the mediocre reviews scared people off the game, because it was getting a lot of good press before the game was released.
In fact I believe this is one of those games that the public likes more than the general gaming press. Capcom still has DLC scheduled to be released for the game, however there is no new information on what Capcom is planning for the DLC. Capcom has actually talked more about a possible sequel to Dragon’s Dogma than the DLC.
