According to a report on Kotaku, Final Fantasy Versus XIII may have been cancelled after six year of development. Not much has been shown of Final Fantasy Versus XIII in the past few years, there have been whispers that something was amiss when they didn’t show the game off last year at the Tokyo Game Show. Well today it is being reported that Square Enix has officially shut down production on the game:
“One source tells Kotaku that Final Fantasy Versus XIII was officially cancelled within the last few weeks. The decision impacted morale at Square Enix and staff were reportedly saddened by the move.
Square Enix, this source added, has also decided to let Final Fantasy Versus XIII die quietly on the vine and fade away, instead of officially announcing its cancellation. This would likely be due to the fact a public acknowledgement of a Versus‘ cancellation could impact things like Square Enix’s stock prices.”
The director of the game Tetsuya Nomura last time spoke about the game earlier this year stating: ”We’re almost done with preparing the latest info for the game,” “Because of a totally unrelated reason, there are circumstances in which that info cannot be released.” Then later in May he again asked for fans to be patient as work on the game had been slow because they were “doing something completely new”.
In addition, Kotaku is reporting that much of the resources for Final Fantasy Versus XIII have been folded into supposedly the next numbered Final Fantasy game (Final Fantasy XV). Square Enix released a statement on the issue, but would not clarrify whether the game had been cancelled:
“We have no information on the status of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but will be sure to update you as it becomes available.”
Later this year Sqaure Enix is holding a celebration for 25 years of Final Fantasy and the Tokyo Game Show is also coming up. Now since there has been no official confirmation that the game has been cancelled, there is still a chance the game could be in development and shown off at this two events. However, if the game is not shown or discussed at either of these events I would suspect heavily that the game has officially been cancelled.
This is extremely disappointing considering the fact that Final Fantasy Versus XIII was the most anticipated Final Fantasy game, and there are actually rumors that Square Enix is actually developing Final Fantasy XIII-3. Not to mention that it was always speculated that once Fantasy Versus XIII finished, Nomura would start working on Kingdom Hearts 3. But according to this report Square Enix has skipped over Kingdom Hearts 3 and moved directly onto Final Fantasy XV.
At this point I just don’t think Square Enix knows what they are doing as they seem to not want to give fans what they have been clamoring for. What is your biggest Square Enix disappointment at this point the rumored cancellation of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, no Kingdom Hearts 3 for the foreseeable future, or no Final Fantasy VII remake?
