In a recent interview Masahiro Sakurai, game director of the upcoming Super Smash Bros game, stated that deciding on the character roster is almost deadly in the amount of time it takes him: it’s a really stressful process for a number of reasons.
The worst thing about deciding characters is that Sakurai isn’t just deciding characters based on his personal preference: the team has also to think about game balance, animation, sound, graphics and so on. The real challenge is to make the right choices to make the character fully fleshed-out in the game’s world.
Obviously Sakurai has also to think about including some fan-favorite characters:
“Whether it’s a minor character or a character that is one of the most highly skilled and most played, if that character is removed from the game, the people who live for that character in Smash Bros. are going to have their feelings hurt.
“I think we have to really consider that, so I take a very serious, hard look at that and have empathy for the players who look for these type of characters when we’re making these decisions.”
The new Super Smash Bros game will launch on Wii U and 3DS sometime during 2014.
