Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was definitely one of the better surprise announcements that came during the Nintendo conference. The game was definitely unexpected since pretty much nothing hinted at a possible sequel for the highly successful Donkey Kong Country Returns, released a few years ago on Wii and recent ported to Nintendo 3DS with a few gameplay additions and extra stages, except for the fact that Retro Studios was working on a yet to be revealed high profile project.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will play not too differently from its predecessor. Joining Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong will be Dixie Kong, who can use her ponytail to increase the height of her jumps. Another character with a special ability will be included in the game which will be revealed at a later date. Among the new gameplay mechanics is the ability to grab objects from the ground to reveal hidden secrets as well as use the object themselves to attack enemies.
Even though the game will surelyy be a really good platform game, quite a few gamers expected a new Metroid game announcement. Retro Studios has clarified the reason behind the choice to develop a Donkey kong Country Returns sequel:
“Well after DKCR we had a lot of gas left in the tank. Lots of cool things we wanted to do. The underwater levels, the 3D camera, we were just very excited to work with Donkey Kong and we wanted to continue that, and the Wii U hardware allowed us to do a lot of really cool tricks. So it was natural to go from the Wii version into the Wii U version and that same level of excitement and a whole lot of new stuff.”
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will be available sometime during November on Wii U.
