In an interview with Polygon, Microsoft Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer shared something very intriguing about their upcoming E3 conference in June. Apparently, Microsoft are preparing a “historic” Rare franchise for the Xbox One.
Ever since Microsoft promised 15 exclusives during the first year of launch, I was hoping that Rare would be responsible for at least one of them. “Fans of Rare and Rare IP I think will be pleased with what we’re going to show at E3. We had a limited amount of time today and a lot of story to tell. But Rare remains an incredibly important part of our development capability. That historic IP that they’ve built I think can play a real important role on Xbox One.”
While Spencer did not clarify further as to which IP this would be, we can narrow down the possibilities. Being a Microsoft exclusive, we can rule out Nintendo’s Donkey Kong Country series. Goldeneye already saw a remake in recent years, and “historic would not apply to recent series like Viva Pinata or Kameo.
I’m most hoping for a new Banjo-Kazooie game that goes back to its traditional platforming roots. Fans have also been pining for Killer Instinct and Conker sequels too, so those would gain a lot of attention. Perfect Dark is a possibility too, though while the original was highly acclaimed, calling it a “historic IP” is a little questionable in comparison to the other Rare IPs–plus, the Xbox One is sure to have a ton of shooters in its line-up already.
What do you think/hope will be revealed?
