During the latest Iwata Asks session, Nintendo’s president has revealed some interesting behind the scenes facts for the upcoming Game & Wario, coming next month in North America and Europe on Nintendo Wii U.
Apparently the game was going to be released together with the console: all Wii U units would come with this game pre-installed. When development started Wario wasn’t even going to be in: the game was going to be simply called Pirates.
When the game’s director Goro Abe decided on the title’s direction he asked Intelligent Systems to start developing the ideas he had in mind. With the E3 close, they had to show some interesting games that could be played by using the Gamepad’s unique features.
Over time the game became more complex, too much for a simple pre-installed software piece, so the team decided to expand it with more games and ended up including Wario as well. Many of the mini-games found in Game & Wario require gamers to use the Wii U Gamepad in a few creative ways: some of the multiplayer games will allow players to play with a combination of Gamepad and Wiimotes.
Game & Wario will be released on June 23 in North America and on June 28 in Europe exclusively on Nintendo Wii U.
