Just when we thought that things were maybe, sort of looking up for the dual-media brand of Defiance with the Syfy television show being renewed for a second season we see game developer Trion Worlds laying off a whole bunch of their staff today, reports Kotaku. The report cites that anywhere in the range of 70-80% of Trion Worlds’ staff has been laid off and that some employees are being escorted out of the building and that severance packages might be denied, which is a super bummer if you’ve ever been laid off, you know.
This comes just days after announcing that RIFT will be moving to a free-to-play platform after lagging sales of the recent expansion pack for the game. Of course they have been quick to boast that they have over one million registered players for Defiance, but there also isn’t a subscription fee behind the game and it has received pretty mixed reviews across the board. They released a statement talking about re-aligning to meet their goals, pretty standard stuff. If anything, it sounds like judgement day for a lot of the staff at Trion Worlds and if you are a fan of RIFT and Defiance like things might get a bit weird in their attempts to make those games more enticing.
