Since the death of THQ there have been a few IPs that have yet to be officially sold off, with their fate hanging in the air as unknown. One of those was the popular Homeworld franchise, which has not seen a title in the series since 2003. It was a beloved space RTS game series that really enamoured a few people, including teamPixel who attempted to snag the rights to the game, but failed to do so and are now creating their own space-based RTS game that will be heavily inspired by Homeworld, but not Homeworld. So who were the actual winners of this franchise?
Gearbox Software, the folks behind the Borderlands games, are the winners in the race and will be able to distribute Homeworld and Homeworld 2 to modern day consoles and PC platforms to help preserve the franchise. Nothing yet if we’ll see a new Homeworld game from Gearbox anytime soon, but we do know that they are planning on doing digital re-releases, which is pretty cool as it is.
