Batman Arkham Origins: A Game Of The Year Contender

2 min

Game Informer just recently announced a new game in the Batman Arkham series, titled Batman Arkham Origins. While many have suspected that another game in the Batman Arkham series was going to be created, it is really great news to hear that the new game will be releasing this year. Rarely do new games get a really close release date when properly announced. We’re all very excited for a new Batman Arkham game as in the past, these games tend to be heavy contenders for a Game Of The Year award.

As the title suggests, Batman Arkham Origins will feature an ‘origin’ story with Batman as an unrefined hero. It will tell how Batman encounters many of Arkham’s infamous villains. This can work in favour of the game, as origin stories can feature a much more enthralling setting and story as gamers experience events somewhat similar to how Batman does. In previous games, Batman tends to already know the villains and other NPCs in the game. With an origin story, all that exposition leading up to meeting new people can be fleshed out in game.

Granted, the developers of the previous Batman Arkham games isn’t getting involved in the game but, the modified Unreal engine used to create the previous Arkham games has been supplied to the new developers, Warner Bros. Games Montreal. I still have a lot of faith that the game will ultimately be good. The core of the Arkham series should already be embedded in the game. The gameplay should be easily adapted and thus hopefully the game will be a viable entrant in the Batman Arkham series.

A new villain shown in screenshots of the game is the assassin Deathstroke. Deathstroke is another major player in the DC Comics universe and this time, we get to see Batman face off against him. Deathstroke is primarily a foe of Nightwing, but we’ll see how he gets adapted in this new game. Deathstroke is a highly intelligent villain, and hopefully we’ll get to see some of that utilised in some shape or form in Batman Arkham Origins.

Other potential villains appear to be Black Mask and The Penguin. Arkham City has a diverse amount of villains to choose from and the boss battles are part of the charm of the game. Reminiscent of the Metal Gear Solid games, the boss battles in the Batman Arkham series have always been fun and unique in their own way. It is always exciting to see how the developers utilise each villains power and abilities to create exciting boss encounters.

For now, the only platforms announced for the game have been the PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and the Wii U. While it remains to be seen whether the game will get ported to the next-generation of consoles, it is great to see the Batman Arkham series send the current generation of consoles off on a last hurrah. Perhaps the focus on current generations consoles will allow WB Montreal to create a more polished game in the series, without relying on trying to achieve next-gen graphics.

There will be a lot of contenders for this years Game Of The Year awards across the gaming media, but the Batman Arkham series has always been a good contender for those awards. Expect the same from Batman Arkham Origins.

Batman Arkham Origins is scheduled for release on the 25th of October 2013 for the PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U. Stay tuned to Explosion.com for more information regarding the game leading up to release date.
