LucasArts once one of the best video game developers has been essentially shut down by Disney. According to the press release, Disney has decided to shut down all internal development projects that LucasArts was working on. The studio will be turned into a “licensing house” for Disney properties. This means that Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault have officially been cancelled and will likely never see the light of day.
It gets worse, due to the fact that all internal projects have been cancelled a lot of people have lost their jobs; one report has at least 150 people losing their jobs. The reason for shutting down the studio according to Disney is to “minimize the company’s risk”; while at the same time Disney hopes to increase their portfolio of good Star Wars games.
There is the possibility Disney wants to outsource all future Star Wars games to other game publishers to keep costs down. However, at this point it is still to soon to know what all this means for future Star Wars games.
