Oculus Rift dev kits are now shipping, and some may have even arrived already, the company announced today. Oculus VR has more than 10,000 headsets to ship, and the company is looking to make a splash in a congested video game market. The Oculus CEO even stated that the new VR headsets are what gamers really want for the next gen. The company released the following statement today on their site.
“We actually started shipping on Wednesday, but we haven’t shared tracking information yet because the team is still tied up at GDC in San Francisco. Sorry about that! This means the earliest backers may actually find Rift’s on their doorsteps before they receive tracking numbers. A little surprise to keep things interesting,” Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey stated.
“This day has been a long time in the making. We’d like to thank you again for your patience, support, and enthusiasm for virtual reality! We couldn’t have gotten here without you.” Now that the VR headsets are shipping, Oculus VR has opened up the Oculus Developer Center, this is where developers will have access to online resources to start adding new virtual reality experiences to their games. I’m not sure if VR will catch on, but I’m sure the headsets will still find an audience.
