You could compare both the original Luigi’s Mansion and it’s upcoming sequel releasing next week to the popular ’80s movie franchise, Ghostbusters. Both Luigi and Bill Murray dispose of ghosts with a vaccuum, and Dark Moon even features a four player co-op mode called ScareScraper – not unlike the team of four in Ghostbusters.
Surprisingly, creator Shigeru Miyamoto reveals that, while he is in fact a fan of the film, the Luigi’s Mansion games were not inspired by Ghostbusters. “I am a fan of “Ghostbusters.” That wasn’t the inspiration for the original “Luigi’s Mansion.””
He goes on to say that he even went to the extent of attempting to make it clear that there were no assumptions of inspiration amonst the audience. “When we were developing the original “Luigi’s Mansion,” we were taking care as a team, even though that wasn’t our original inspiration, to make sure that people didn’t just assume that that was what we were trying to do.
Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is available now as a 3DS exclusive on March 24 in the US, and will release this week on March 28 2013 in Europe under the title Luigi’s Mansion 2.
