The PS4 has been praised by a number of developers and publishers for the past couple of months now, but it seems that one game designer isn’t all that impressed with Sony’s new system. American McGee, most notable for his work among American McGee’s Alice, has recently stated that he isn’t as excited the PS4 as everyone else is. During an interview with Forbes, McGee discussed the lack of innovation, and that next gen will struggle because of the growing popularity with mobile gaming.
“I was hoping for innovation in control input. Didn’t see anything meaningful, so “meh.” It’s nice that they’re moving towards what looks like more developer-friendly hardware and indie friendly distribution. Remains to be seen if the appearance matches reality,” McGee stated. “Overall, I think this generation of consoles will struggle painfully against the momentum of mobile/online games we’re seeing globally.”
He isn’t the first designer who thinks that mobile and casual games will be the future of video games, a statement that I can’t disagree more with, but you can’t argue with their reasoning. Mobile gaming has become really popular over the past few years, with a lot of big time developers switching over to mobile development, a trend seem to be forming.
