Nintendo has announced that they are working on some original animate shorts based on the Pikmin series. Designed with the 3DS’ 3D capabilities in mind, the shorts will be released during the lead-up to Pikmin 3‘s release.

They will be available through the Nintendo eShop and, if the episodes prove “popular”, Nintendo may consider selling them. Franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto states that ”we really just want to take advantage of the Pikmin characters.” Miyamoto will be overseeing the creation of the cartoons.

He has teased a scene planned for the first episode, where protagonist Captain Olimar will appear to be eating what looks like a Pikmin, but turns out to be a carrot. ”When Olimar first discovered the Pikmin he named them based on the PikPik brand carrots in his home world, so he clearly loves carrots,” Miyamoto explains. “I thought it would be fun to have a scenario where it seems like he is going to eat the Pikmin. So it’s kind of dark, but he doesn’t eat them.”

Sounds fantastic! I hope Nintendo continue this trend and begin to create videos for their other franchises, too.
