An organization like PETA is one that the world needs to remind them from time-to-time that animals are important — just as important as humans are — but sometimes they might miss the mark. In the case of them attacking Ubisoft after the recent announcement of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag due to there being violence against whales, it seems like that might be missing the mark a little bit. Not every fictional piece of entertainment can be like Star Trek IV where Spock and Kirk have to travel back in time to keep the humpback whales from going extinct in the future to save the world.
Ubisoft released a statement today to that effect, stating that they do not condone illegal whaling, just like they don’t condone the lifestyle of a pirate. The claims from PETA were that Ubisoft were glorifying the hunting and slaughtering of whales by making it part of a game, while Ubisoft’s argument is that this is a piece of historical fiction and that whaling was indeed a part of a life at sea in history past.
