During the presentation in which the PS4 was unveiled, we got a sense of Sony pushing for a lot more digital distribution with their game releases, the ultimate goal of Sony being able to have all their games available for streaming. Sony even mentioned recently how they are aiming at making all PS4 games available digitally. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Sony is looking to get rid of physical software completely, as Playstation Europe CEO Jim Ryan told IGN recently that he sees discs being the main form of game distribution into the PS4’s future.
Ryan told IGN that while he does see digital downloads rising in popularity and usage, he still stated that “the primary delivery mechanism for the big games on the PS4 platform will continue to be Blu-Ray discs, for the foreseeable future”. As games only get more advanced, the file sizes will inevitably grow which will require a longer downloading time. Ryan mentions this concern with saying how some people with poor internet connections would have to wait unreasonably long times for a game to download and would much rather just buy the disk.
I personally favor discs when buying games, especially with the big releases, because of that feeling of security of owning a physical copy. I know a lot of people though, have voiced that they would much rather have games move to an all-digital platform. What do you favor: disk, digital, or maybe both?
